Senior Health Scientist
Background:
The National Center for Healthy Housing, formerly the National Center for Lead-Safe Housing, is a private non-profit organization located in Columbia Maryland. The Center is seeking a senior health scientist with an interest in residential hazards to children to lead its research staff. The Center's mission is to develop and promote practical methods for reducing residential environmental health hazards, while preserving the supply of affordable housing. The Center is seeking an action oriented practical researcher with experience and interest in this field.
The Center's focus includes the development of scientific information necessary to support its mission, assimilation of scientific information in a manner of use for public policy and regulatory agency deliberations, the development of public policy at all levels of government and assisting national and local public policy implementation.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Scientist will have a critical leadership role in developing a broad-based healthy homes research agenda. In general, this role will include: Helping to set research/funding priorities, writing proposals for research and demonstration projects; directing and managing funded projects; preparing documents for publication; developing and evaluating assessment protocols and building guidance; and, helping disseminate project results to a broad constituency. The applicant will be responsible for keeping abreast of ongoing research in the healthy homes arena by concentrating on housing-related health issues. The applicant will report to the Executive Director of the Center and will work closely with other senior managers to chart the Center's short and longer-term research goals in the healthy homes arena.
Qualifications:
The applicant can come from any number of health backgrounds but must be experienced in designing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting scientific studies involving a wide variety of environmental, housing and health data. The applicant will be joining a multi-disciplinary staff with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, finance/insurance, housing and public policy. Staff members serve as principal investigators, members of teams of investigators and liaisons with local partners. The Center conducts field research and research translation through partnerships with housing and public health agencies, universities and other interested groups.
The applicant will have a Ph.D. in a health related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in environmental health. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience working on housing related health issues (e.g., asthma, molds, mildew). The applicant should have a demonstrated track record of publication and presentation of scientific data as well as an ability to help acquire extramural funding. The applicant should have demonstrated experience working in teams and be flexible as priorities shift. Good writing skills are a must.
